Why do employers screen employees?

Employment screening is collecting and analysing a set of data on a potential employee before they are offered employment. The purpose of it is to verify claims they have made which dictate their suitability to work, and in some cases fulfilling legal requirements.

One of the legal requirements for employers is if a person is working in some positions, for instance those with contact with children or vulnerable adults, they must have the right level of CRB checks completed. But why is it in employer’s best interest to do other checks, even when they are not legally obliged?

Employment screening reduces the risk to the employer of serious problems such as fraud, but also of other issues such as cultural which could lead to costly employment tribunals. In essence they are part of the process of an employer protecting the best interests of the organisation.
